12-Week Course Curriculum

Divided into 12 subjects this course offers blah blah blah...

Class 1:

The Keyboard as a Map

Understand the keyboard as a system of patterns. Locate notes and understand whole tones and semitones as the foundation for building and understanding the keyboard.

Class 2:

Major Scale Formula

Understand how a major scale is built using whole tones and semitones. Apply this formula to C, G and D Major and begin to recognise the same pattern across different keys.

Class 3:

Moving Through Keys

Add A and E Major. Work on fingering and coordination while learning to transpose the same structure into different keys.

Class 4:

Pulse & Rhythm

Develop a steady internal pulse. Understand quarter notes, eighth notes and subdivision, and begin coordinating both hands rhythmically.

Class 5

Building Chords

Discover how major and minor triads are built and how they relate to the scales we already know. Introduce numbers/scale degrees as a way of understanding harmony that can be transferred from one key to another.

Class 6

Chords Within a Key

Discover which chords appear within a key and which ones play a particularly important role. Begin to understand why certain chords are so closely related and connect these relationships to the Circle of Fifths.

Class 7

Harmonic Movement

Hear how chords create stability, movement, tension and resolution. Analyse examples from real music to recognise these relationships by ear and at the piano.

Class 8

Rhythm in Harmony

Combine what we have learned about harmony and rhythm. Coordinate both hands using chords with different combinations of quarter notes and eighth notes, developing simple accompaniment patterns.

Class 9

From Chords to Melody

Use chord tones and flexible scales over the keys we have learned to create short melodies. Explore a fundamental question: Can we maintain pulse, harmony and coordination while creating music in real time?

Class 10

Learning from the Masters

Listen to how great musicians create interesting ideas using very simple musical materials. Experiment with repetition, contrast, space, direction and rhythm to begin building musical phrases with intention.

Class 11

Make It Your Own

Take the same musical idea and transform it. Explore how rhythm, register, dynamics, articulation, accompaniment and variation can completely change the character of simple musical material.

Class 12

Integration

Bring together key, rhythm, harmony and improvisation in a short piece, arrangement or original improvisation, using the tools developed throughout the course with greater independence.
